Abstract : The conventional distances between the trees are determined by the need to allow agricultural vehicles between the rows. With an increase in the use of small trees, planting distances between the rows have been reduced without increasing the amount of shading, but this requires different vehicles. Yield increases in more densely planted orchards can be achieved by the use of improved cultivars, controlling irrigation, use of dwarfing rootstocks, and growth retardation. Smaller trees make better use of the incident radiation. Mango is cited as an example.
