Report for the period 1st October, 1972 to 30th September, 1973.  : 64 pp.

Abstract : Systemic nematicide trials are in progress in Rhodesia against Pratylenchus penetrans on apple, Radopholus similis on banana, Tylenchulus semipenetrans on citrus, Meloidogyne javanica on peaches and P. zeae on maize. Pyrethrum is reported to be highly susceptible to M. hapla but not to M. javanica. Aphelenchoides besseyi has for the first time been found to survive in the soil between rice crops, and for the first time in Rhodesia, in seed.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on pyrethrum included hybrid observation trials, an irrigation experiment and studies on susceptibility to, and the control of, Meloidogyne spp.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on tropical crops briefly noted in this report included: Bananas: Variety, spacing and fertilizer trials. Coffee: Artificial shade; NPK and ZnP experiments; management trial; and the timing and frequency of fungicide sprays against leaf rust [Hemileia vastatrix]. Mangoes: Variety trial. Pineapples: N fertilizer trial. Tea: Studies on foliar and soil applications of Zn.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on vegetables noted in this report included: Brassicas: Studies on uniformity of maturation. Cucurbits: Variety trials. Peas: Herbicide testing.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on temperate tree fruits briefly noted in this report included observations on apple, apricot, peach and pear cvs; studies on the propagation of apple rootstocks by hardwood cuttings; and investigations on the more rapid production of apple, apricot and peach seedling rootstocks.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Fasciola gigantica in cattle, with an incidence of 34.17%, continued to account for a greater mass of condemned liver than the total mass of all carcasses condemned in Rhodesia for all reasons. Stilensia hepatica in sheep and goats (total incidence 89.9%) is a chronic problem. There was a slight fall in the incidence of Cysticercus bovis in cattle (from 1.62 in 1971-72 to 1.44% in 1972-73) and a small increase in the incidence of C. cellulosae in pigs (from 0.41% in 1971-72 to 0.61% in 1972-73); the latter was, however, accompanied by an increase in the number of free-range pigs in the Bulawayo region.
