Abstract : Trials from 2 sites showed that whip (or splice) grafting generally gave higher success rates (after 6 weeks) than cleft (or wedge) or veneer grafting. Thirty-day-old seedlings performed better than 15- or 45-day-old seedlings as rootstocks, and the highest success rate was obtained with a scion of the past year's growth which was defoliated 10 days prior to grafting. The scion cultivars Dashehari and Langra were more successful than Taimuria and Fazali. Lifting and grafting gave better results than grafting in situ. A length of cut of 3 cm was better than one of 2 cm. Application of IAA or IBA (50 or 100 p.p.m.) did not improve the success rate.
