Abstract : Selected mango cultivars from a total of more than 100 strains collected in the 1950s at the Government Fruit Research Station, Basti, were compared for yield, quality, total sugars, acidity, ascorbic acid and TSS content with the local cultivars Bombay Green, Dashehari, Baramasi Langra, Gaurijeet and Samar Bahist Chausa. Out of 14 cultivars from eastern India, Krishnabhog, Safdar Pasand and Sukul were most promising. None of the 7 western Indian collections was as good as the local cultivars. From 20 cultivars from southern India, 8 set no fruit, 2 tended to give malformed fruit, but Ambalavi, Vellai Kolamban and Neelum gave higher yields than the local cultivars and equalled them in quality.
