Abstract : Neelum mango peel was extracted with n-hexane to give 2.5-3.0% of a cream-coloured wax of pleasant odour. Its melting point was 62°C, acid value 39, saponification value 197, ester value 158, iodine value (Wijs) 44 and unsaponifiable matter 18%. Mango peel, which amounts to 10-20% of the fruit by weight, is also a good source of pectin. It is estimated that 1-2 million tonnes of mango peel are wasted each year.
