Abstract : In the panicles of Alphonso mango, fruit set is confined mostly to the tip of the inflorescences, and secondary branches do not carry fruit to maturity, unless the terminal growing point of the panicle is pinched out. Thinning out the panicles gave fruit set at the tips of secondary branches retained at the bottom of the inflorescence. The number of fruits set per inflorescence was greater when three-quarters of the panicle was retained (10.5), than when a half (4.6) or a quarter (1.0) was retained. The untreated control gave a fruit set of 3.2 per inflorescence. This suggests that the growing point of the panicle serves as an active sink, monopolizing the supply of metabolites and leading to its tip-bearing habit.
