Abstract : Evidence is presented that mango flowering is induced by stress factors such as shoot bending, ringing, shoot and root pruning, partial uprooting, low temperatures, drought, salt stress and anoxia due to flooding. Stress can bring about early flowering, shortness of flower duration, an increase in 'mixed' panicles and cauline flowering. Before flowering, auxins, ethylene, abscisic acid and other growth inhibitors accumulate, while gibberellins and cytokinins decrease, showing that stress occurs at this time. Different stresses are effective in promoting flowering at certain times of the year only, suggesting that other factors are also involved.
