Abstract : Panicles 1-2 cm and 3-4 cm long on 20-year-old Dashehari mango trees in the 'on' year were sprayed with growth retardants on 8 Jan. 1985 in order to delay flowering to more favourable pollinating weather. Paclobutrazol (Cultar) at 2500 and 5000 p.p.m. and Vaporgard (2.5 and 5%) were the most successful in delaying panicle development and flowering, particularly when applied to 1- to 2-cm panicles. Alar [daminozide] (5000 p.p.m.) and Phosfon-D [chlorphonium] (1000, 2500 and 5000 p.p.m.) accelerated panicle growth, while Cycocel [chlormequat] (1000, 2500 and 5000 p.p.m.) and Alar at 1000 and 2500 p.p.m. had little effect. Vaporgard and Cycocel increased the number of fruits per panicle. The effects of Cultar, Alar and Phosfon-D on fruit set varied with the different concentrations and initial panicle size.
