Abstract : The dispersal of sterile Anastrepha ludens and Ceratitis capitata was studied in a mango and coffee plantation in Chiapas, Mexico. Flies were released at the centre of a rectangular array of McPhail and Jackson traps. Fly distribution was correlated in the x-y plane on several days and these orientations were also related to wind direction. Released flies disappeared quickly; >90% were caught within 5 days of release. Methodology for the presentation and analysis of data is discussed in relation to the needs of a practical sterile release programme. Recommendations are made for routine studies of fly dispersal.
