Abstract : This paper was presented at a symposium on tropical fruit in international trade held in Hawaii on 4-9 June 1989. Methods of treatment of fruits entering the USA from abroad to satisfy quarantine requirements are described. A perceived need for rationalisation of those requirements is discussed. It is suggested that fumigants (methyl bromide and phosphine) will continue to be useful in stored grain, whilst hot water treatments have been used against Anastrepha spp., Dacus [Bactrocera] spp. and Ceratitis spp. on mangoes and papaya [pawpaw]. The use of dry heat, vapour heat and irradiation are discussed. Cold treatment is described as having potential for use, although many tropical fruits are not cold tolerant.
