Abstract : Ten different regimes for rearing Dacus dorsalis [Bactrocera dorsalis] including the effects of synthetic diet, orange juice, water supplies, combinations of these and not feeding were tested in the laboratory. The greatest adult longevity was obtained from those fed on orange juice with a full water supply and the greatest fecundity was obtained from those fed on synthetic diet. Flies survived for only 3 days when given no food or water and for 5 days when given only water. The larval stage of flies reared on mangoes was shorter than that of those reared on guavas or Citrus. Those reared on Citrus showed the greatest adult longevity, although female fecundity was lower. Females fed on fructose lived longer than those fed on glucose or saccharose, but their fecundity was very low when fed on these low protein foods. The longevity and fecundity of adults fed on artificial diet were much greater than those fed on 10% sugar solution. Parameters of population growth were calculated for flies reared on different fruits. The intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were greatest when the tephritids were reared on mangoes and least when reared on Citrus, while the greatest net reproductive rate was shown by those reared on guavas. The longest mean generation time (85.84 days) was shown by flies reared on Citrus and the shortest by those reared on mangoes.
