Abstract : The pseudococcid Rastrococcus invadens was introduced into West Africa in about 1981 and became a serious pest, particularly of mango and Citrus. A biological control programme was initiated in Togo, using the parasitoid Gyranusoidea tebygi from India. The parasitoid was reared under quarantine in the UK before being shipped to Togo where it was mass-reared. In 1987, the parasitoid was released in a number of different ecological zones in Togo. Within 12 months the parasitoid had spread 100 km from the initial release point where R. invadens was under control.
