Abstract : The behaviour of adults of the tephritid Anastrepha striata collected from guava plantations in Costa Rica was studied under laboratory conditions. Oviposition behaviour was observed on 5 species of ripe fruit. Guava and Psidium friedrichsthalianum were the most attractive fruits for oviposition (100% oviposition), there was less oviposition (20%) on Spondias dulcis and no oviposition on mango and avocado fruits. Greatest adult activity was observed between 9.00 and 14.00 h under high light intensity. Under cloudy or cold conditions there was little adult activity. Both low (18°C) and high (28°C) temperatures negatively affected adult activity and survival. Notes on pre-oviposition behaviour and intraspecific competition on larval substrate are given.
