Abstract : Soft-nose is a disorder in which breakdown of the flesh towards the apex of the fruit takes place before ripening. Mesocarp cells in fruits of the cultivars Kent and Beverly collected in Senegal showed marked cell separation and cell wall degeneration. The site of the disorder, next to the endocarp at the tip of the fruit, had the lowest mesocarp Ca content of the whole fruit. Fruits from a site where the disorder was prevalent contained less Ca than those from a site where it was not apparent. However, the fruit Ca contents of the 2 cultivars growing at the affected site did not differ significantly, although Kent was much the more susceptible cultivar (90% of fruits affected, compared with 30% for Beverly).
