Abstract : The results of studies between 1990 and 1992 are discussed. Dipping fruits of various cultivars in hot water (55°C for 2 min) plus prochloraz (40.5-81.0 g/hl) effectively controlled anthracnose [Glomerella cingulata] and soft brown rot [Nattrassia mangiferae] in fruits stored for 28 days at 11°. Prochloraz was less effective against soft brown rot when applied at ambient temperature. A 5-min prochloraz dip at 55°, or a hot water dip at 55° for 5 min followed by an ambient-temperature dip in prochloraz for 20 s, proved phytotoxic although 2-min dips at 55° or 5-min dips at 50° did not do so. Hot water dips (52° for 5 min) followed by ambient sprays or dips of chloramizol [imazalil] sulphate or quazatine at 100 g/hl effectively controlled soft brown rot. Modified atmosphere packaging was found to control anthracnose but not soft brown rot. A moderate dose of ?-irradiation (0.75 kGy) plus hot water dipping gave excellent control of both diseases, but fruits treated in this manner were more susceptible to lenticel damage.
