Abstract : A survey of the species from the Tephritidae occurring in 2 mango orchards was carried out and their population fluctuation was determined in the Federal District, Brazil, in 1987-89, and using Melpan traps. Ceratitis capitata occurred in both orchards and 10 species from the Anastrepha genus occurred in the first and 8 in the second orchard. A. obliqua was the main species occurring in the 1st orchard (37.8%), while C. capitata accounted for 81.9% of the species found in the 2nd orchard. The number of flies/trap/day was highest in the maturation stage of the fruit (November-February). The effects of environmental factors on number of flies was not apparent owing to the wide spacing of trees. It was recommended that monitoring of mango orchards during the fruiting and maturation periods (October-February) and collection of fallen fruits be carried out as a control measure.
