Abstract : The exploitation of existing cultivars, exotic fruits and wild relatives for fruit crop improvement and the development of new fruit crops is reviewed by considering the following: crop origins; fruit crop improvement; and the search for new fruits, including temperate and subtropical fruits (pome and stone fruits, Diospyros kaki, grapes, Vaccinium spp., Rubus spp., nut crops, Citrus spp., Persea americana and Ficus carica), and tropical fruits (Musa spp., Ananas commosus, Mangifera indica, Carica papaya, Averrhoa carambola, Annona spp., Passiflora edulis and Theobroma grandiflorum).
