Abstract : Bacterial canker of mango caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae first appeared in a severe form at the Experimental Research Farm, Rehmankhera, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, during early Jun. 1988. During inoculum build-up in May the temp. ranged from 17.3 to 48°C, RH from 25 to 100%, wind velocity from 0.04 to 8.65 km/h and there was 1 day of rain (0.8 mm). It is suggested from this that frequent rainfall is not essential for a build-up of inoculum. Of 212 cultivars evaluated for disease resistance, 95 were free from infection, 51 were resistant, 44 were moderately susceptible and 22 were susceptible. North Indian cultivars were more susceptible than cultivars grown in the south or east of the country. Disease incidence also varied with locality. Of 5 chemicals (streptocycline, Bacterinol 100, Bavistin [carbendazim], Blitox [copper oxychloride] and paushamycin) evaluated during 1987-88 for control of mango canker, 200 p.p.m. streptocycline gave the best control followed by Bacterinol 100.
