Abstract : The 3 cropping systems used in Venezuela (monoculture, intercropping and high density planting) are described. The most common intercrops are maize, cowpeas, Phaseolus vulgaris and Xanthosoma sagittifolium. In some areas, mangoes are intercropped with vegetables, such as Capsicum or cucumbers, or other fruit crops, such as pawpaws, passion fruits, avocados or pineapples. In high density planting systems, trees are planted at 8 × 7 or 8 × 8 m (178 and 156 trees/ha, respectively). Cultural methods and production costs are outlined for the 3 systems.
