Abstract : Total free phenol content and polyphenol oxidase activity were determined diurnally, in different types of fruit buds of the mango cv. Alphonso, during fruit bud differentiation (FBD). Phenolic content of fruit buds increased steadily with advancing FBD, but remained stable in undifferentiated or scar buds. The activity of polyphenol oxidase [catechol oxidase] was higher before and during FBD than afterwards. The possible involvement of phenols in FBD is discussed.
