Abstract : The rooting of hardwood mango cuttings is promoted by ringing and IBA treatment. This effect was studied in relation to the protein metabolism of the treated material. Ringing in mature and young plants resulted in carbohydrate accumulation above the ring. Increased protein synthesis in ringed shoot cuttings was associated with an increase in DNA and RNA synthesis. Both ringing and IBA treatments resulted in the incorporation of relatively large quantities of free amino acids into the bound form. The prevention of such incorporation, by means of a protein synthesis inhibitor, had an adverse effect on root formation.
