Abstract : This is the first of a series of 13 volumes presenting the results of research by Indian scientists on a wide range of horticultural crops, namely, fruit crops (4 volumes), vegetable crops (2 volumes), potato, tuber crops, plantation crops and spices (2 volumes), medicinal and aromatic plants, ornamental plants, and mushrooms. Individual chapters within each volume are written by scientists from research institutes belonging to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and various agricultural universities and colleges in different states. The chapters are illustrated with plates (black and white, and colour) and figures. Each volume has its own author and subject indexes. The 4 volumes on fruit crops comprise a total of 117 chapters bringing together information on specific aspects and problems of commercial fruits of India. This first volume (27 chapters) discusses fruit research in India, genetic resources of fruit crops, promising fruit introductions, conservation of fruit genetic resources and has individual chapters on genetic resources of Mangifera, Citrus, banana, guava, Vitaceae [Vitidaceae], grape, underexploited fruits, and temperate fruits, and improvement of mango, Citrus, banana, guava, grape, papaya [pawpaw], pomegranate, minor fruits, apple, stone fruits and nuts, and temperate fruits for the subtropical climate. The final chapters discuss pollination and pollinizers, pollen storage and incompatibility systems in fruits.
