Abstract : Although only the common Indian mango, Mangifera indica, is grown commercially for worldwide sale, the mangoes comprise a host of species, many of which have edible fruits and are cultivated or harvested for local consumption, or for commerce in the immediate vicinity. This book, published for the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources and the Linnean Society of London, aims to provide horticulturists and growers with a complete overview of all species of the genus Mangifera, including descriptions, distribution, occurrence, phenology and nomenclature. The first 4 chapters discuss the genus Mangifera, phytochemistry and chemotaxonomy of the Anacardiaceae with special emphasis on Mangifera, conservation, and a historical overview of the development of knowledge of Mangifera. The next 2 chapters give details of the subgenera Mangifera and Limus and 69 species within them. Two further chapters provide information on species of uncertain position and excluded species. There are indexes to scientific and vernacular names and collection numbers.
