Abstract : The breeding of mango in India is reviewed. Following an introduction to species of the genus Mangifera, early improvement work at Kodur, Sabour, Saharanpur and Quaidian (Punjab) is outlined. The breeding techniques and studies which have been employed are discussed and include: single day pollination of a limited number of flowers in a panicle; use of genetic markers; a caging technique; inheritance patterns; interspecific hybridization and mutation breeding. Information is also presented on the recent development of cultivars through hybridization at 8 research stations.
