Abstract : Production and exports of fruit from South Africa are reviewed. The importance of the export trade, exports of main types of fruit in 1992 and forecasts for 2000 are described. The UK and Germany each take around 33% of exports from Unifruco, one of two main exporting firms, with the other European countries taking all but 2.4% of their sales. The regional distribution of citrus fruit, mango, banana, avocado and pineapple production and the areas under apples, pears, peaches, table grapes, apricots, plums and nectarines in 1992 are set out. Cooperative structures, prices and production problems as well as quality control are also discussed.
