Abstract : The main species damaged by birds were cocoa, Spondias cytherea [S. dulcis], mangoes and oranges, and the main bird pests were the rufous-vented chachalaca (Ortalis ruficauda), the orange-winged parrot (Amazona amazonica), the crested oropendola (Psarocolius decumanus) and the red-crowned woodpecker (Melanerpes rubricapillus). Planting fruit species in the forest in order to provide birds with an alternative food source is recommended as an environmentally acceptable method of reducing damage to cultivated crops.
