Abstract : Constants were derived for various tree crops, using 50-100 leaf samples, for computing the leaf area index (LAI) using the LI-3000A portable leaf area meter. The constants were as follows: 0.74 for arecanut; 0.71 for cashew; 0.66 for cocoa; 0.63 for coconut; 0.69 for clove; 0.78 for jackfruits; 0.64 for mango; 0.71 for nutmeg; and 0.70 for pepper [Piper]. The leaf area of an individual leaf from these crops is the product of the constant and the leaf length and maximum width. The leaf area was also estimated for these crops using a simple linear regression with and without an intercept through the origin. Except for jackfruit and pepper, the rē was highest for an equation with an intercept through the origin.
