Abstract : The mango rootstock 13/1 has relatively high salt tolerance under field conditions, but the mechanism of this tolerance is not known. The morphological and physiological responses of this cultivar to increasing salt stress were studied using 0, 20, 40 and 60 mM Na+, applied as NaCl or Na2SO4. The reduction in vegetative growth was greater with NaCl than with Na2SO4. At low salt concentrations, leaf area was reduced but the number of leaves increased. Plant analysis revealed higher Na+ concentrations in young than old plant parts. Saline conditions significantly reduced transpiration rate, especially with NaCl.
