Abstract : Low mango yields in the tropics are often attributed to the failure of flower induction. In subtropical areas, however, plants flower well but fruit set is poor. Research on these problems is discussed. Recent work has shown a strong genotype × environment interaction within various cultivar groups, which can largely explain their relative performance. In addition, there is general agreement that day/night temperatures below 20/15°C trigger flower induction. In subtropical areas, however, cold night temperatures of 10° during anthesis were found to be the primary cause of poor fruit set. This leaves a fairly narrow day/night temperature window for optimum flower induction and fruit set.
