Abstract : Sixteen-year-old alternately bearing mango cv. Alphonso trees were treated with paclobutrazol as a soil drench (5 and 10 g/tree) or foliar sprays (500, 1000 and 2000 p.p.m.), during July and Aug. each year for 3 successive years, to induce regular cropping. Averaged over the 3 years, the vegetative flushes during Sep. and Oct. were significantly reduced by the 2 soil drench treatments (5.12-5.31% of the stem bearing terminal vegetative shoots) compared with the control (48.54%). There was a corresponding 2.6-fold increase in yield from 101.87 fruits/tree to 274.19-287.98 fruits/tree, with no effect on fruit size and quality. Foliar sprays were less effective. Soil drenches were applied to the cultivars Ratna, Kesar, Pairi, Goamankur, Amrapali, Doodhpedha and others by growers during 1991, with good results.
