Abstract : Mango trees (cultivars Keitt and Julie) on cv. Turpentine rootstock, were grown in root observation chambers, to determine the pattern of root and shoot growth over 12 months. Root and shoot length were measured at 7- to 18-day intervals from Aug. 1990 to Aug. 1991. Up to 6 shoots/tree were recorded and the growth of visible roots against the glass chamber was observed. Shoot growth was cyclic, with distinct periods of growth and quiescence. Keitt produced 4 flushes of shoot growth/year, and a greater shoot extension rate than Julie, which had with 5 flushes/year. Root growth tended to be continuous, with only brief periods of quiescence. Root and shoot growth bore no relationship to each other in either cultivar.
