Abstract : Results are presented on the cumulation of a 15 year (1977-92) programme designed to find alternative mango cultivars to complement cv. Kensington Pride which currently comprises >90% of the North Queensland plantings. Detailed data on fruit characteristics and time of maturity were obtained from 112 lines at a wet coastal (Kamerunga, ~17°S, 20 m elevation) and a dry highland (Walkamin, ~17°S, 570 m elevation) location. With the use of appropriate cultivars a 15+ week harvest period can be obtained in any one district, compared with the brief 2-3 week period offered by Kensington Pride. Keitt, Palmer and the Queenland bred cultivar R2E2 were identified as the most promising cultivars.
