Abstract : This study: examines trends in the export of fresh mangoes from India; identifies major countries importing Indian mangoes; examines varietal and quality preferences for export purposes; identifies constraints in the export of mangoes; and suggests measures for boosting mango exports. India mainly exports mangoes to Middle Eastern countries, the UK, Singapore and Bangladesh. Fruits of uniform size with a yellow colour and a sweet flavour are preferred in the international market. Transportation of mangoes is usually by air and sea. The constraints include: a short production season for some types of mangoes; the non-availability of adequate air cargo space in the mango season during April-August; the lack of direct links with all mango importing countries; the expense of air freights; the lack of adequate cold storage facilities; insufficient space for storing and packaging of mangoes; and the high cost of consignments. It is suggested that the production of some varieties should be increased by expanding the area under these varieties. Charter air cargoes and cargo ships should be provided during the mango season. Air freights should be brought at par with air freights of the countries competing with India for mango exports. Adequate cold storage facilities need to be extended to mango exporters and packaging should be developed to prevent losses during transit. Security needs to be improved.
