Market prospects for dehydrated and dried tropical fruit.

Abstract : Dried fruit is one of the world's major agricultural businesses. Although the tropical fruit portion of this trade is small, it is supplied exclusively by developing countries and represents a valuable source of foreign exchange earnings. In 1993 total world trade in dried tropical fruit was around 30 000 t, valuing $55 million. Demand could rise in the longer term as new end uses are developed and new markets opened up. The USA, Germany, France and the UK are the largest markets for dried tropical fruits. The main fruits in the dried fruit market are bananas, pineapples, papayas, and mangoes. Policies surrounding the trade of these products are discussed. There are four main market segments: dried fruit and nut market; breakfast cereal market; confectionery industry; other.
