Abstract : A field survey of red and lateritic soils under mango (Mangifera indica) in Karnataka, India was carried out in February 1992. Eleven soils (Haplustalfs, Paleustalfs, Kandiustalfs, Rhodustalfs and Ustropepts) studied varied widely in morphology and physicochemical characteristics. N, P, and K fertility status varied from low, medium to high. Soil depth, coarse fragments, erosion and surface runoff were the major soil-related constraints for mango growth. Most of the orchards suffered from K deficiency.
