Respiration rate of the mango fruit peel and its association with bacterial black spot.

Abstract : In apparently healthy mango fruits, Sensation fruit peel gave the lowest respiration rate and increasing rates occurred inthe order Zill, Haden and Kent. This is in the same order as the polyphenol oxidase activity and ascorbic acid destruction rates of the same cvs, suggesting a direct connection between low 02 uptake and the lesser intensity of the hypersensitive lesion formation. In Haden the respiration rate of the peel adjacent to the lesions, in the early stages of infection by Erwinia mangiferae, was lower than that of healthy fruit peel but changed to a higher rate in later stages when lesions had increased in severity.
