Abstract : Epiphytic populations of X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae were found on 18 of 36 weeds common in and around mango orchards. Under experimental inoculation conditions, populations of the bacterium varied from 0.3×10² to 16.66×10³ and 0.5×10² to 10.86×10³ c.f.u./leaf on hosts that had tested positive and negative for natural survival, respectively. Survival was longer on positive hosts than on negative ones. Water splash transmission of the bacterium from the weeds induced bacterial canker on healthy mango plants. Survival of the pathogen on weeds may be important in the mango disease cycle.
