Abstract : Studies were conducted in plantations of arecanut (Areca catechu) cv. Srivardhan Rotha in Raigad district, Maharashtra, to determine the comparative economics of different plantation sizes. Yield of dry nuts was highest (1238.98 kg/ha) in medium-sized plantations (0.58 ha). Where mixed cropping with coconut, banana, jackfruit, nutmeg [Myristica fragrans], mango and pineapple was carried out, coconut contributed 43.61% of gross returns. Total returns per hectare from arecanut + mixed crops were highest (Rs?58?963.22) in small plantations (0.22 ha) and lowest (Rs?50?248.34) in large plantations (1.10 ha). The cost of maintenance decreased with plantation size. Labour was the largest factor contributing to cost (26.38%). Overall, net profit was Rs?18?327.82 and cost:benefit ratio was 1.50. The study indicated that plantations were overcrowded.
