Abstract : Trends in research and production of tropical, subtropical and temperate fruits in Brazil are outlined. Citrus cultivation increased after 1960 when juice production began, and citrus is now the main fruit crop grown in Brazil (966?879 ha in 1992). Cashews are the second main fruit/nut crop (533?904 ha in 1992), followed by bananas (453?242 ha), coconuts (196?050 ha), and grapes, mangoes, pineapples, passion fruits, apples, peaches, avocados and pawpaws (all 60?000 ha each). Many native fruits are harvested in the wild, and in recent years some of these have been planted in organized orchards using selected cultivars. Total annual fruit production is estimated at 32 Mt. Internal consumption is high and 1% of the fruit crop is exported.
