Abstract : A number of diaspidids were imported from India and Nepal, including some individuals of Aulacaspis tubercularis. Nine parasitoids of the genus Aphytis were raised but could not be mass reared. Large numbers of another Aphytis species were also reared from another closely related armoured scale, but they were unable to parasitise the mango scale, and subsequently died. The parasitoid, Aphytis mytilaspidis, imported from Taiwan, was mass reared at the ITSC, and released in great numbers in mango orchards near Kaapmuiden and Nelspruit. Trails were conducted to quantify the mortality effect of fenthion on the indigenous scale parasitoid, Aspidiotiphagus citrinus [Encarsia citrina]. Nine days after an initial exposure period of 10 hours, fenthion still produced 100% mortality in the parasitoids.
