Abstract : Some 17 mango (Mangifera indica) cultivars/selections were evaluated as three-year-old trees in the phase II evaluation programme at Nelspruit. Yield, fruit size, and ripening period were the most important evaluation criteria. The cultivars/selections were compared with 2 commercial cultivars, Tommy Atkins (early) and Heidi (late). Phase II evaluations were repeated at various localities. At this early stage, selection G10 bore a larger crop than any of the other cultivars and selections studied. Rootstock evaluation also forms part of the Phase II programme. The oldest plantings were 3-years-old. Five rootstocks are also included. Four scions were budded on each rootstock type (one per rootstock) to determine cropping potential. Sabre serves as the control rootstock. Lesser known rootstocks were better than Sabre in influencing cropping.
