Abstract : The market appeal and consumption of mango, the fifth ranking fruit produced in the world, are sharply increasing in developed countries, particularly Europe. Most mangoes are grown in developing countries: India produces 10 Mt, 60% of global volume, followed by Mexico, Pakistan and Thailand (854 000 t, 780 000 t and 614 000 t, respectively). The global trade volume for Central and South America is estimated at more then 250 000 t. Mexico is the world leader for exports. The USA absorbs 90% of Mexican exports. The USA is the largest importer (76 000 t). There has been a 30% average yearly mango import growth rate in the USA since 1988. The EU is the next largest importer. The UK is the top EU consumer. The EU market is the most diversified with respect to countries of origin and varieties offered to the consumer. African countries are losing their competitive advantage as Asian and American producers become more efficient.
