Abstract : A visit was paid to the Congo to determine the potential of tropical and subtropical crops in the Niari Valley. Mangoes were identified as having the the biggest potential. More than 30?000 mango trees already exist in the area. These trees could be topworked with commercial cultivars from South Africa. Other crops with potential are bananas, pineapples, papayas [pawpaws], citrus and avocados. It is recommended that small trial plantings of these crops be established before any commercial plantings.
