Abstract : Fruits of mango cv. Alphonso growing at Hessaraghatta, India, were examined at 15-day intervals from set to maturity in 1991 and 1992. Fruits showed a sigmoidal growth curve. Growth was slow in the initial stages (up to 30-45 days from fruit set), then there was a period of rapid growth followed by a period of slow growth. IAA concentration showed 2 peaks, the first and larger of which (70-80 ng/g fresh weight) occurred at 15-30 days after fruit set, preceding the period of rapid fruit growth and possibly contributing to the cell enlargement phase. There were high concentrations of ABA and ethylene in the initial stages of fruit growth which may have been involved in the fruit drop which occurred during this phase, while the slightly elevated levels, especially of ethylene, later during fruit growth may have been related to fruit maturity and senescence.
