Abstract : Mali was the first country to begin exporting mangos (around 1970), followed by Côte d'Ivoire (early 1980s). Mango production structures were developed to address European market expectations and price fluctuations. The quality concept was gradually developed on the basis of criteria such as fruit shape, colour and size. This led to the creation of new cultivars, with mango cv. Kent being one of the best, and the planting of large monoclonal orchards. Increased mango production has caused a drop in selling price, and stricter quality standards have increased fruit quality requirements. It is essential to spread out the production period in order to provide a regular supply. Research to develop better agricultural practices, to assess new cultivars and improve crop protection, harvesting and storage techniques is discussed.
