Abstract : The present status and production possibilities for development of this non-wood forest product resource in Madhya Pradesh are discussed. The major tree species involved are Shorea robusta, Madhuca indica [M. longifolia], Pongamia glabra [P. pinnata], Schleichera trijuga, Azadirachta indica and Mangifera indica. Outlines are given of various programmes proposed for their development, to be undertaken by the MP Minor Forest Produce Cooperative Federation (MFPF), and concerning management and trade. These are: survey and demarcation of seed production areas; the establishment of seed orchards and seed banks; primary processing and value addition; storage and godowning (warehousing); marketing through cooperatives; the involvement of NGOs; production through farming (plantations) and home gardens to avoid over-exploitation; and extension and training. Constraints are outlined.
