Market structure and co-operatives.

Abstract : The structure and performance of mango marketing in two talukas of Valsad district of Gujarat are analyzed. The four largest firms handled 17 per cent. of turnover in Valsad and 49 per cent. in Gandevi. Seller concentration was much higher in Gandevi which has a good structure of marketing co-operatives. On price performance, though Valsad mangoes were a superior variety, they procured lower average prices. Co-operative sales did not help to set farmers higher prices, though they reduced marketing costs.
