Abstract : A total of 3934 Phase I seedlings have been planted at Nelspruit, Malelane and Messina since 1992. Some 510 selections from these plantings were evaluated at Messina in the 1995-96 season. Formal evaluations of seedlings at Nelspruit and Malelane will start in the forthcoming season. Approximately 500 seeds were given to co-workers for Phase I evaluation. A nursery trial has been initiated to select rootstocks tolerant of salinity. In this trial, seedlings are irrigated weekly with either 60 mM sodium sulfate or 60 mM sodium chloride.
