Abstract : Mango cultivar and rootstock evaluations are carried out at four different localities in South Africa, viz. Malelane, Messina, Nondweni and Nelspruit. The Malelane trial first started in 1996, whereas the Nelspruit trial bore its first crop in 1995. Twenty cultivars and 34 selections from the breeding programme are currently being evaluated in the scion evaluation programme. At this stage Heidi and Neldica outperform all the unregistered selections. The rootstock evaluation programme is being carried out at three localities with seven rootstocks and 15 poly-embryonic selections. Lesser known rootstocks are performing better than Sabre at this stage. Yield and fruit size of the cultivars on the different rootstocks are discussed and compared.
