Abstract : In an attempt to develop an alternative to estimation of fruit maturity by volume of water displaced by fruit, fruits were sampled from 16 trees of mango cv. Manila in a 31-year-old plantation in Veracruz, Mexico. Measurements were recorded of basal, mid and apical width and diameters on 19 dates from 20 days to 131 days after fruit set (30 days after maturity). An equation is derived to estimate fruit volume at any growth stage. The resulting estimates were not statistically different from values derived by the traditional water displacement method. Fruit growth followed a single sigmoid curve.
